Rebuilding the Bridgeton Covered Bridge


The Bridgeton Covered Bridge was burned on April 28, 2005. The local community immediately came together and decided to rebuild the bridge. Fund raising began and on January 12, 2006 a bridge raising ceremony was held. On August 28, 2006 the spans of the bridge were lifted onto the abutments. The completed bridge was dedicated on October 1, 2006.

January 2006

The bridge rasing ceremony was held to kickoff the construction of the new Bridgeton Covered Bridge.

 

 

 

February - March 2006

Trees were donated by landowners and the Indiana State Forests. The trees were harvested by local logging companies and delivered to Bridgeton.

 

April 2006

The sawing of the logs into beams begins with local sawmill owners and volunteers.

 

 

 

May - June 2006

The final logs were delivered and sawed into the beams and boards that were used to construct the bridge.

 

July 2006

The construction of the bridge spans was completed in the field north of the creek. Each of the bridge spans was constructed on the ground.

 

 

 

August 2006

The construction of the spans was completed. The spans were raised so they could be placed on dollies and transported onto the concrete bridge to be lifted onto the abutments.

 

August 28, 2006

Two cranes were used to lift the bridge sections onto the abutments. The lift was observed by a large crowd, including school children from the local schools.

 

 

 

September 2006

After the bridge was secured to the abutments the floor decking and arches were installed. The last steps were to complete the roofing and siding. New approaches were also constructed for the bridge.

 

October 2006

The Bridgeton Covered Bridge had an official dedication on October 1, 2006. A large crowd witnessed the dedication. After the dedication everyone who worked on the bridge or contributed to the rebuilding of the bridge was invited to a community meal.
